Toyota recently announced the development of a new, third-generation fuel cell system that will be applicable to multiple sectors, including commercial transportation.
The 3rd Gen FC System can be installed in both on- and off-road commercial vehicles and passenger cars, as well as stationary generators, rail, and ship applications. For consumers, the improved fuel efficiency provides greater cruising range for light-duty cars, while the heavy-duty sector will benefit from an increased level of durability that is comparable to diesel engines, according to the OEM. The system was also designed to be more compact, making it easily integra table into different commercial vehicles.
The new system, which was unveiled at the H2 and FC EXPO in Tokyo, Japan, touts a 20% increase in fuel efficiency to extend the range, as well as a significant cost reduction related to innovations in both cell design and the manufacturing process.
