At ACT Expo today, Chart Industries announced the availability of a new onboard liquid hydrogen fuel system line of products for heavy-duty trucks — HLH2. The new fuel system, now offered for commercial use, was developed to meet growing market demand for a variety of fuel cell and internal combustion engine applications.
HLH2 was engineered and manufactured at Chart’s Ball Ground, Georgia, facility and tested at its New Prague, Minnesota, facility, tapping into the company’s experience in both natural gas and hydrogen fuel systems. According to Chart, the product line employed decades of experience in liquid natural gas fuel systems and its more than 50 years of experience in liquid hydrogen fuel storage.
With a global capacity for more than 25,000 units per year for the new HLH2 onboard product, the system requires roughly half of the space and weight of comparable H35 or H70 compressed hydrogen storage. This provides advantages for truck applications with heavier loads and longer ranges. Chart demonstrated dual-side mounting at ACT Expo, which is similar to a convention diesel tank, but it also comes in other configurations to suit a variety of vehicle designs.
