Announced last August at the 2021 ACT Expo, the Joint Electric Truck Scaling Initiative, or JETSI, is a ground-breaking project that will deploy 100 battery-electric regional haul and drayage trucks across California. Led by South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD), this project will be the largest commercial deployment of battery-electric trucks in North America to date, combining the EV technology of both Daimler Trucks North America and Volvo Trucks North America, as well as the freight experience of national carriers NFI Industries and Schneider.
As the project begins to take steps towards further electrifying these two fleets along freight corridors around the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, as well as distribution centers across Southern California, several of the partners are coming together to discuss the first steps during a one-hour webinar on January 26, at 10 a.m. PST.
JETSI is the first battery-electric truck project jointly financed by California Air Resources Board (CARB) and the California Energy Commission (CEC), which together awarded the project $27 million. JETSI is part of California Climate Investments, a statewide program that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment — particularly in disadvantaged communities.
NFI and Schneider will operate a combination of 80 battery-electric Freightliner eCascadias and 20 Volvo VNR Electric trucks, replacing the equivalent of approximately 690,000 diesel gallons annually, while also helping to accelerate the commercialization of battery-electric commercial vehicles across the market. The project will also include the installation of a total of 50 EV chargers, several warehouse upgrades, and the addition of on-site energy storage and rooftop solar panels.
